The Dynamics of Modern International Relations: Analyzing the Sino-US Summit and Cultural Power Through the Lens of Hegemony and Virtue
Modern international politics often appears to revolve around visible military and economic strength. However, a deeper examination reveals that the ideological dynamics explored by ancient Eastern philosophers remain remarkably valid and operational today. This essay analyzes the recent May 2026 Beijing summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, alongside the global cultural phenomenon of BTS, through the core Eastern philosophical concepts of Hegemony (霸道), Virtue (德治), and Transformation upon Impasse (窮則變).
1. The Trump-Xi Beijing Summit: The Collision of Hegemony (霸道) and Strategic Position (勢)
In Eastern political philosophy, Hegemony (霸道) refers to a governance model that conquers and rules the world based on hard power, strict laws, and strategic manipulation. Han Feizi (韓非子) of the Legalist school emphasized that a sovereign must skillfully employ Strategic Position (勢) and Methods of Control (術) to maintain authority and pursue national interests.
The Beijing summit held this May serves as a stark arena demonstrating this hegemonic political style.
- The Strategic Position (勢) of the US: President Trump utilizes his nation’s massive domestic market and tariffs as formidable economic weapons, transforming them into a powerful strategic position to pressure his counterpart—a textbook display of hegemonic negotiation tactics.
- The Methods of Control (術) of China: In response, President Xi Jinping maintains diplomatic decorum by sharing a symbolic walk through the Temple of Heaven (天壇公園). Subtly, however, he deploys his own methods of control by seeking self-reliance in tech supply chains, securing a long-term strategy for national survival.
This strategic stalemate creates a structure where both nations block each other, leading to a standstill. The Book of Changes (周易), specifically in the Xici II (繫辭下傳) section, explains this state of deadlock as follows:
窮則變 變則通 通則久
- Core Concepts: Transformation upon Impasse (窮則變), Breakthrough (變則通), and Endurance (通則久)
- English Translation: “When a situation reaches its extreme impasse, it must change; once it changes, a way through opens; when a way through opens, it can endure for a long time.”
The meeting of the two leaders can be interpreted as a process of seeking diplomatic “Transformation” to avoid catastrophe when relations have reached an extreme impasse. Even if a grand compromise is not achieved immediately, keeping the channels of dialogue open is itself an act of inducing a breakthrough and maintaining a “Passage” within the international order.
2. The BTS Phenomenon: Modern Virtue (德治) and Soft Power
While hegemonic politics relies on coercion and self-interest, Virtue (德治)—the ideal governance envisioned by the Confucian school—is grounded in moral influence and voluntary compliance. Confucius (孔子) stated in the Analects (論語), Weizheng (爲政) chapter:
爲政以德 譬如北辰 居其所 而衆星共之
- Core Concept: Governing with Virtue (爲政以德)
- English Translation: “Governing with virtue is comparable to the North Star, which remains fixed in its place while all the other stars revolve around it in homage.”
In modern international relations, “Soft Power”—the ability to co-opt rather than coerce, attracting others through cultural appeal—can be viewed as a contemporary adaptation of Confucian Virtue. The global cultural phenomenon of BTS exemplifies this perfectly.
Without relying on weapons or coercive decrees (Hegemony), BTS has forged a voluntary bond that transcends race and borders through the sheer moral resonance and empathy (Virtue) found in their music and message. The global public aligning with their cultural values, much like stars revolving around the North Star, proves the immense vitality and far-reaching impact of cultural virtue in contemporary society.

Conclusion: Global Politics as a Balance of Yin and Yang
According to the ancient Eastern worldview, the universe maintains balance through the continuous interaction of the strong, assertive ‘Yang’ (陽) energy and the soft, receptive ‘Yin’ (陰) energy.
The current state of international relations operates on the exact same principle. The assertive hard power (Yang energy, Hegemony) represented by Trump and Xi, and the receptive cultural soft power (Yin energy, Virtue) represented by BTS, coexist like two sides of the same coin, shaping the current flow of the world.
A world tilted entirely toward one side is inherently unsustainable. Only when the buffering effect of Virtue tempers the tension of Hegemony can international society achieve an unobstructed cycle and long-term stability.
